Just when you’d thought you’d seen everything, someone or something new shows up. Today I met Jack. Jack is a 70 year old gentlemen with a mechanical heart. Three years ago his heart gave out and being older he was not a candidate for a heart transplant. He was able to receive a mechanical heart.
Implanted in his abdomen is a motor that causes the blood to flow through his heart and out to his body. This motor is powered by two external batteries which are worn in a vest he wears during the day and powered by electricity at night. Jack has no pulse because his heart muscle does not function. Pretty amazing and what a wonderful man. I can only hope that if something like that ever happened to me I would be as joyful and gracious.
